Vintage glasses for a fiver?!

posted: 02-Feb-2010

Sad news shoppers.

After three years of fashion filled, concept driven fun, Circus Store in the Powerscourt Centre will be closing its doors for the last time on Sunday the 7th of February.

While this news brings a tear to our eyes, we can’t help but find ourselves somewhat consoled by the fact that the store is having a huge sale with 60% off all stock until Sunday 7th Feb at 5 p.m.

That means 60% off labels such as b Store, Eley Kishimoto, Henrik Vibskov, Poltock & Walsh, KTZ and Carin Wester. Nice!

There’s also two €10 rails, vintage shoes and sunglasses for €5 and all denim is €50.

So, without further a do, get yourself down to Circus to say hello, and goodbye.

It’s couture week and we’ve been busy swooning over the delightful and delicious collections fresh from Paris. Check out the Christian Dior collection above - the fine fabric, the excessive embellishment, the intricate details, the mouth-watering colour palettes....if only it wasn’t just a TAD out of our budget.

Like most Irish cailins, we love a good bargain from Penneys but sometimes a budget dress just won’t cut it. If, like us, you occasionally find yourself drooling over designers and lusting after labels but haven’t a hope of affording them we may have the perfect solution: Covet on the second floor of the Powerscourt Town Centre, South William Street offers you the opportunity to rent the dress of your dreams for a mere fraction of the retail price.

The collection features fashion and accessories from the worlds leading designers, up and coming talent and exquisite vintage collectibles.

Indulgent and practical, we likey!

Covet's opening hours:
Monday - Saturday: 10am to 6pm
Thursday: 10am to 8pm

For more information or to book a private appointment phone 01-6799313 or click here to check out Covet's website.

Isn't it well for some? Kylie Minogue in the front row at Christian Dior.

Anne Hathaway at Armani Prive (probably laughing coz she knows the designer will send her publicist any of the dresses she fancies to wear for free!)

One of the gorgeous guna at Armani Prive. (Well, a girl can dream! In the mean-time we're rather happy with our discovery of Covet!)

Shoppers, we've got both good and bad news.

The good news? West's Fine Jewellers on Grafton Street is offering 50% of ALL jewellery and watches. (Take our advice ladies: St Valentines Day is fast approaching, now is the time to start dropping those not so subtle hints!)

Now, the bad news. The sale is because the jewellers is closing down for good. Yes, it seems Grafton Street's excessive rents have taken their toll on the store. Although rents on our most renowned shopping street have dropped slightly from the peak levels of 2008, the street still ranks no.8 in the latest ranking of the world's most expensive retail streets. (New York's Fifth Avenue is at no. 1)

Unfortunately that doesn't quite mean the street is lined with top-notch retailers. Far from it - the street has become littered with cheap gift outlets, mobile phone shops, takeaway cafés and convenience stores. (Place your bets now as to whether West's will be converted to Vodafone, O2 or Meteor!)

It's not that we could ever afford the bedazzling creations in West but as it closes it takes with it one of the few touches of class left on the street. Remember the days when a stroll down Grafton Street was a pleasant experience? No? Us neither!

Teen star Miley Cyrus was spotted shopping on the street recently. Wonder what she thought of our vast selection of phone shops and take-aways!

West isn't the only shop to be affected by high rents. Dunnes Stores closed last year and the building High Street chain Warehouse used to occupy still lies empty. Another McDonalds perhaps or will Starbucks get there first?!

  • Jan-25 - annmarieThat's so sad about Grafton Street. Walking down the street used to be such an exciting thing to do - with numerous coffee shops to drop by or buskers to watch. The top of grafton st (near st stephen's green) is a bit like oxford st in london - thrashy with a capital T

It's cheap as chips time!

Fancy picking up a quality print by an Irish artist in a deal that won't break the bank?

Last night we were in town at the launch of new print exhibition at  the uber-hip Circus store in Powerscourt Townhouse, Dublin.

Circus store in Powerscourt is a hip fashion and art boutique run by young Irish talent.

The Cheap As Chips launch yesterday evening was the second one of its kind where trendy young folk sup free beers and talk 'projects'.

This is a mixed media exhibition featuring 23 artists and will run until the end of January 2010. All artwork will be on sale in Circus Store for a maximum price of €99.99.

The prints on show vary in price from €3.03 for a cassette tape in a printed box with recordings of telephone answering messages, to high quality laser prints of architectural drawings for up to €99. Also included are three small sci-fi paintings by graffiti artist turned fine artist Jor. See Jor paintings here

You really must pop over to Circus and see this one for yourself. Not only for the prints on show but for the fabulous collection of stylish and unique fashion.

BT2's new spring collection

posted: 14-Jan-2010

With the country covered in ice and temperatures below freezing it's hard to even think about ditching the winter coat let alone wearing a pair of shorts but, while it may not seem like it, spring is just around the corner and with it a whole host of fresh trends.

So ladies, what will we be wearing when the temperatures eventually start to rise?

Well,
BT2 have just unveiled their key looks for the coming season and, according to a BT2 buyer, the dress isn't going anywhere. Suits us fine - it's one of the easiest things to wear. Just team with killer heels and you're good to go!

The playsuit is still around for the more daring amongst us. Give it a try - they're honestly less scary than you may think!
This denim number from BT2 is a good investment buy - it will go with everything and can be dressed up or worn with flats for a more casual, daytime look.

Florals, abstract prints and animal prints are everywhere, as are nude palettes with fashion going all romantic. Not sure about the shorts/boots combo but check out this t-shirt for casual wear that's right on trend.

BT2 will stocking two of the most exciting mid-range labels to emerge this year. 'TBA' (To Be Adored) has a collection of elegant, feminine pieces in luxurious silks while 'Daddy Long Legs', a leggings-only label, looks set to become a wardrobe staple with their graphic prints and bold colours.

This pink dress from 2love by Tony Cohen is €160 and perfect for adding a touch of colour to your spring wardrobe.

Celebrities' crafty new hobby

posted: 04-Jan-2010
With this cold snap set to continue, it looks like it’ll be a while before we can ditch the winter woollies.

Why not take this as the perfect opportunity to look chic, save money and stay warm by taking up a crafty new indoor hobby?

Knitting is all the rage these days with ‘Stitch and Bitch’ sessions popping up all over the country and celebrities such as Cameron Diaz, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kristen Thomas being spotted carrying knitting needles.

If you haven’t picked up a ball of wool since primary school fret not. This Is Knit in the Powerscourt Town Centre, South William Street is offering knitting classes for all levels. The classes are held on Fridays from 11a.m to 12p.m and cost €10 a session (if you buy your class materials from the shop, you’ll receive a 10% discount). Sessions are limited to three students per class to ensure individual attention and plenty of quality learning time! Classes book up quickly so secure your place by phoning 01-6709981.

If you’re stuck for ideas on what to knit, check out this free pattern for an adorable toasty hot water bottle cover from This Is Knit's website. It makes the perfect present (top marks for being thoughtful without having to spend a fortune!)
.

For more knitting ideas or to shop online, check out This Is Knit's website.

One of This Is Knit's classes in progress - the small class size allows for more individual attention and means that even a knitting virgin can be turned into a pro in no time!

  • Jan-6 - ClareBI always find it really hard to find nice wool in Dublin but with more places like This Is Knit opening it seems to be a bit easier. There's also a new knitting shop open in the Swan Centre in Rathmines which is worth checking out if anyone else is on the hunt for wool!

Sales, Sales, Sales!!

Boyfriend jacket                  Was €78 Now €65.00 @ Warehouse

Yah!! There are few upshots of the recession, but one of them has to be the pre-Christmas sales. Many started online last week, and at the weekend big fashion highstreet stores also began discounting heavily including French Connection and Warehouse. It may be a bit daunting to witness hordes of shoppers sharpen their elbows as the dive into the sale rails to bag a bargain, but we have a few key pieces worth checking out.

Tweed Crombie Coat                         Was €78 Now €65.00 @ Warehouse

Layla Boot             Was €147 Now €117 @ French Connection

Sweets Dress             Was €96 now €77 @ French Connection
