First off Connacht's 16-10 win again The Scarlets.

They were in control from the off, especially in the first half, with the likes of Cronin, Muldoon and the evergreen Johnny O’Connor having cracking games.

Connacht's no 10, Ian Keatley kicked 11 points, which saw Connacht gain a much needed win on Friday night against The Scarlets.

Scarlets did get a late one but, as I’ve said, Connacht’s fate is in their own hands and if they can pull off a couple more like this in succession, it could be a much different season for them.

Is the red machine back?

Looking at the stats of the Munster and Ulster game, you’d be thinking that the red machine must be rumbling again!

After a slow enough start, they finally started to show some of the metal that everyone has come to expect but has been missing recently.

This was spear headed by a few men, Wallace, POC, Mafi and Quinny (even though he is a penalty machine!)

A special word has to go to Paul Warwick, again he had a cracker! He is one player, that no matter how the team have been doing, he has been doing his job more and more, day in day out.

Rediscovered passion.

Their lineout worked better (although the throwing by all the provinces is pretty dire at the moment) but it was in things like their kick chase that the passions of old was rekindled.

Although a bonus point win would lead you to believe that all is well, then you look at the score and see ROG’s still not knocking them over with his usual panache.

Yes, his kicking out of hand was great, but you just get the feeling he's still not back yet.

When early in the first half, he wouldn’t take the crack at the points, he was really looking uncomfortable with making the decision. Not his usual march up and go for it.

Ulster were stupid

Now it has to be said, Ulster were stupid, in loads of instances they were their own worst enemies.

Their lineout was dire, they gave away stupid penalties and turned over at lot of ball.

This would be typified by the performance of Nagusa, two of his many instances spring to mind, first when counterattacking, he was trotting back with the ball looking for a gap to run at the defence, he chooses to run straight at Wally and Quinlan, the two worst people to run into on the Munster team....turn over!

And then for Keith Earls try, he never even took one step forward off the line to stop him. Keith must have thought his birthday had come!

Everybody know you must come up off your line hard in defence when threatened, especially against Earls!

They did in fairness to them show a huge amount of aggression while defending the side of rucks and on that note I can’t wait to see Ferris in action in the internationals, his physicality is leagues ahead of most and he looks hungry!

Roland's reffing was terrible

One other thing on this game, I thought Alain Roland was terrible!

He is a ref I have a lot of respect for (I played for years with him at Blackrock and Leinster) but I thought he missed so much in this game.

One good example was the scrum, Ulster had a clear advantage here but couldn’t do anything about it, as Alain never reffed it!

When under pressure you cannot stand up in the scrum. Munster did nearly every time and got away with it...bad day for him!

Not quite as much to say about the Leinster game unfortunately!

Leinster see off understrength Cardiff

They put away an understrength Cardiff Blues side in some style, with some good performances.

Sean O’Brien had a powerhouse game, he started to show more of the link man needed to make an openside.

I still think he is a 6 not 7, the only thing he is now missing, is the effectiveness on the ground that Jennings has.

Cian Healy was again tireless and must be close to that No.1 slot.

Others who did their international cause no harm at all, were Shane Horgan and Sexton.

Fitzgerald for the wing!

I'm still stuck on the back 3 for Ireland, as I love seeing Fitzgerald play on the wing and not centre.

He is a live wire and every time he gets the ball there you feel something exciting is going to happen but that would keep shaggy off! More thought needed!

McLaughlin again put his hand up and asked “Why was I left out?!”

Ruck needs work

One thing that Leinster have to go back to work on, is the ruck.

They turned over too many balls here and also weren’t giving Reddan anything like the protection he should be getting.

This is just an attitude thing with guys expecting others to do the job, easily fixed but can be costly.

Important win though, and sees them top of the League before the break, job oxo as far as their concerned, I suppose!!

  • Nov-4 - crawfy (garr17)Interesting time coming up Wilko Back Aus not looking to great alot of injuries in potential starters for us. south africa Keeping very quite in the press! never thought I'd see the day!
  • Nov-2 - crawfy (garr17)Here again is me praying once again deccie can overlook the past and pick on form the odds are slim for it to happen, but with o'gara not kicking his pointts and looking shakey, maybe just maybe its time to trhow a spanner in the works. if healy doesnt start I will eat my keyboard!!!!! and I agree on the McLaughlin thing, that a wrong choice was made there!
  • Nov-2 - IansupportsrugbyGood weekend for Irish rugby and well done.We have a nice position that we are arguing selection at this early stage and that can only be positive. I hate saying it because i like to stir it when i can but i agree with Shane on most of the above.Shrewd judge is our shane. Cannot wait for the internationals to see where we are all at really? Ian

Are we seeing the end to a few of the names that have helped Irish rugby be at the top in the Northern hemisphere for the last couple of years?

Big Mal, Girv the Swerve, Quinny and to a lesser extent Jackman have been involved in some of the big moments of the last 10 years.

Great moments from great players

Who could forget Mal’s try saving tackle, driving Reagan into touch and helping us complete England’s welcome home, when they were world champions!

And while we’re at it Girvan’s excellent try in that game - a great moment. Or Quinny’s try against Argentina to keep us in the World Cup in ’03. He dislocated his shoulder scoring that, a trend of injuries that has plagued his career.

It’s been a hell of a turnaround for him, from Lions selection in the summer to this in about 6 months!

Declan picking for the future
We have seen all these guys make comebacks in recent times but with Declan’s squad, do you get the feeling that this is the way he is going to go for the future?

Unfortunately I do. Declan has publicly stated that he is going to build to the 2011 World Cup, hence this selection. Let’s face it, you guys have got it pretty right, barring a couple of exceptions, the starting XV will have a very familiar shape about it.

Most of the new guys in the squad are there to gain experience, play on the A team, getting used to a system that they will be part of for the foreseeable future.

I suppose rather than just naming who is there to learn, let’s go through a probable starting team for the first test.

Starting XV?
Loose head could be one of exceptions, Cian Healy has been the form prop this season and it could be a good time to blood him in.

Yes, Marcus has been one of the better forwards in a pack that isn’t firing yet but if Declan’s eye is to the future, why wait?

I was surprised to see Bernard not get the call up and in truth I had completely overlooked Cronin. If Flannery doesn’t get back to full fitness in time it would have to be, as the regular starter, Cronin to fill the gap.

Hayes will start at 3, nuf said! Who will partner Paul in the row is the next question, on form, Leo is ahead of Donners but he has been hit with injuries and is missing games.

Another thing to consider is the fact that Paul and Leo are very similar in many roles. Both leaders, both call the lineouts for their teams, etc..

In general play not a problem, runner vs. grafter work together but can their natural leadership qualities work for or hinder them. Be great for Ireland if they could.

Bob Casey out, madness
Nuts that Bob appears to have joined the Old Guard already!

The backrow picks itself, you couldn’t see past Wallace, Heaslip and Ferris. In fact I'm looking forward to seeing them back together again after the Lions!

In the backrow, how you can call any selection a form selection, without McLaughlin being involved is wrong.

I think Redden might start a 9, he getting into his stride in Leinster (a move he should have made a year ago!) while O’Leary is suffering behind his off-form pack.

First 2 games are trials for the 10s
Sexton will start one of the games but I can’t see it being the Aussie game. Yes, O’Gara not quite himself but experience will probably come to call on this one. The way the games fall they will be like trials for these two, after one game each, the best will start against South Africa.

Back 5 could go any way
In the back 5 it’s a bit fluid, other than 13 of course! Who plays inside centre, will effect who plays wing.

Gordon Darcy hasn’t really hit the form he needs to lock up the 12 shirt, so could see either Earls or Fitzgerald here. Kearney will start at 15, so then you have to ask has Shaggy played himself back into contention? But then what about Tommy Bowe?

Jasus!! I don’t know, I’ll have to take another week on that one, let me know what you think.

  • Oct-30 - ArmchairWith Bowe playing in the centre for Ospreys at the minute he might start alonside BOD?? putting Luke & Horgan on the wings and Kearney at 15. No suprise with Jackman, not getting his game at Leinster has probably ended his short international career and cost him a few more caps
  • Oct-29 - IansupportsrugbyHas to be Kearney,Bowe,Horgan based on form and fitzgerald and god sorry Bod in the centre to start with O Gara and Reddan at half back with D'arcy,Earls and Sexton very much coming on for a run asap.If form selections is to be backed up. The pack is as Shane pointed to with a deserved Cullen ousting O Callaghan but for the short term i'd imagine?. McLaughlin and Casey really should have been squad members and with a view to good runs at least against fiji. Calls like Gavin Duffy (Sorry offers little and missed tackles etc)are hard to take when leaving others out.Is it a sop to connaught? Ian
  • Oct-29 - crawfy (garr17)Baesd solely on form it would have to be shaggy on one wing Bowe on the other. Luke is playing well at any position but I dont think he is ready yet, but earls isnt either for 12, tough call on that. I can see earles getting game time at 15 against fiji to stir things up. McLaughlin is on great form but is hard to break that back row you ahve mentioned above! Leo Should get his shot again against fiji, donners will start against Aus. just my thoughts

Hi Everyone

Just a quick one for now, as the Irish squad is being announced later in the week and I thought as we’re so close, we may as well wait till then to have a proper blog.

Still, there are a few things to talk about today, have you noticed that the same two things let the big two teams down at the weekend, rucking and kicking!

Breakdown killing "big guns"

Both were beaten well at the breakdown, turning over lots of good ball.

In Munster’s case, you can add to this the fact that their discipline has started to slip here.

Kicking is also a much bigger problem for Munster, when they haven’t been playing well they have always have had O’Gara to fall back on and this just isn’t there at the moment.

Is all ok with ROG?!

Listening to him on the radio and reading some of his comments - it just doesn’t sound good in camp ROG!

Yes, we all know that he is supremely confident (if that is the right word!) but when you read him trying to pick one good game that he has had this season (Indo) and talking about how experience counts, it sounds like he is feeling the pressure that Sexton is putting him under.

Have no doubt Ireland still needs him to be playing well, whichever way Kidney goes for the starting berth, healthy competition is the only thing that can bring out the best in these players.

Leinster shouldn't have rested players

Why did Leinster rest players going into this one? Wouldn’t next week have been a better one? Had they not been watching Ulster in the last while? (Expect a good few northies to be in Declan’s squad!)

Cian Healy was missed in the front row, neither of the second rows were natural lineout leaders and on that note how in hell did they just allow Ulster to just keep throwing the front of the lineout?

In crap weather, lineout defence 101 is stop them getting easy ball, stack the front and make them try to throw it long! Drive you nuts!

I’m not even to go into how much Sexton kicking alone was missed and not just for points, the positional kicking wasn’t smart.

Who played well?

Heaslip and O’Brien played well, the latter could make the November international squad.

Also it had to be said is there any end to Brian O’Driscoll and his hunger for the game?!

The only reason that I’d look forward to the sad day that he does retire, is that we can finally start calling him, rightfully, the best that there ever was!

Connacht let another slip, they fought hard but they need to be winning these games soon! Have a look at the table and see why.

Connacht as feeder, won't happen!

You are all right, a feeder province would work great in developing talent but the problem here isn’t the IRFU but the other provinces themselves.

They do not want to have players going to other teams with all the knowledge they would have of their structures, calls, etc...that’s just the way it is.

Talk to you soon.

Hooker Shane Byrne, 37, was Leinster’s most capped player and earned a reputation as one of the world’s most accurate line-out throwers. The BBC once said he was so precise, he was more like a darts player throwing the ball to its target.

Shane won 41 caps for his country, helping Ireland win the Triple Crown in 2004 and helping bring Irish international rugby to a new level with wins over South Africa, Australia and England.

And in 2005 he travelled to New Zealand with the Lions where he featured in all three tests.

He retired from professional rugby in 2007 when he returned from playing with Saracens in England.

He recently hung up his boots permanently, after spending the last two seasons with Blackrock, where he started playing senior rugby 18 years ago!

Shane, who is nicknamed Mullet after his distinctive gruaig, lives in his native Aughrim. He drinks Guinness, likes everything from Metallica to Michael Jackson and rates Eddie the Eagle as his hero!
