Another high week of drama on the GAA scene, 3 GAA high profile peolpe begin their drive to launch their upcoming books and they all got off to a flying start. well as the man says, there is no such thing as bad publicity.

All 3 involved will be very happy indeed with all the media attention they have received to date but sure what else is going on in GAA circles only the boring club scene and journalist have damn all to fill their weekly columns with.

Alas, Mickey Harte, Donal Og and Tadgh enter the scene and the papers go the work big time. And if I was their book PR guy I would be very happy with this head start and no doubt all will make lovely xmas presents for dads all over the country.

All these books will sell well but...

I however can't really see how much money can be made on such book sales. Ireland has too small a population and I certainly would not wash my dirty linen out in public for a few thousand euro.

Maybe the maths add up as Mickey Harte and Tadgh Kennelly come across as guys who know how to twist a pound or two.

Donal Og is gay - Cork's worst kept secret

Donal Og's revelation in his book that he is gay was the worst kept secret in Rebel country.

I can only imagine the taunting he has received from hecklers in the crowd because as a goalie he is a sitting duck. He must be mentally a very strong guy to put up with same and it will be interesting if he decides to continue playing for the rebels.

To me one of the bravest places to play in hurling is in goals and certainly a hurling goalie is not your sterotypical gay. to come put public is a very courageous thing to do. no doubt the book will go well for avid hurling fans.

Tadgh Kennelly's 'deliberate foul' baloney

The most discussed book was Tadgh's - for all the wrong reasons.

Tadgh is a lovely fellow and I would be very surprised if it said in the book that he had premaditated to taking out Nicholas Murphy- but this is the way it was twisted last Sunday's paper and then all hell broke lose.

There are alot of angry rebel fans and rightly so if that is printed in the book. No player or county deserves that.

I can honestly say that having spent 14 years playing with Kerry and during that time I had 4 managers - Mickey Ned, Ogie, Paudie and Jack O' Connor - and never did they advocate, encourage or nourish dirty play.

In fact, is was publicly discouraged. Fine we had hard men and Kerry had hard players on the field over the years but none went out to intentionally hurt their opponent. it was always frowned upon in Kerry and it always will.

Tadgh, I feel, was taken out of context but he has learned a harsh lesson - books are a dangerous animal- just ask Jack O Connor.

Surprised with the Mickey Harte book too

I was very surprised to see Mickey Harte having a go at Sean Cavanagh. To me Cavanagh is a super player and has given his life to the Tyrone cause. For Mickey Harte to say otherwise on the build up to the Cork match really surprises me. Mickey comes across as a fellow who has the ultimate respect from his players and this no doubt will do him no favours.

Back to the all stars, Mike Mac and Anthony Lynch were unlucky to lose out.

I was happy for Daniel Goulding but Pearse O Neill can find himself lucky to get the nod. he had a great year but a a terrible final. M Shields was a lucky full back - 2 bad days out in head office and he still gets the nod - there just was no major opposition bar Tommy G and sure they were never going to give 8 to the Kingdom.

This weekend I am taking the cobwebs off the boots to play in a charity match up in Tuam.

Organised by Padraig Joyce and Michael Donnellan, it is for a young lady called Valerie Dolan - the charity is Vision For Valerie Dolan. - so if you are around Tuam around 3pm go and watch a few old dinasours like Glen Ryan, Anthony Rainbow, Kieran McDonald, MartinMac and many more line out against the present Galway team and please support a worthy cause

All the best and talk next week if i come back in 1 piece

Great night for All Stars

posted: 16-Oct-2009
The Vodafone GAA All Stars goes ahead tonight with the hurling team already selected, 6 coming from the Kilkenny Cats.

Henry Shefflin has won his 9th award, a great achievement and well deserved. I was delighted to see PJ Ryan win his first award, rarely do we witness a CATS Goalie winning this prestigious award.

Who would have thought McCrabbe would get this far?

It will also be a fantastic night for Alan McCrabbe from Dublin. What were the odds of this happening at the start of the year.

Maybe next year we might have 2 Dublin all star midfielders as Shane Ryan has thrown his lot to the Hurling panel.

At the end of the day you could not blame him, he was badly treated by Gilroy this year. No time play, no impact, far cry from his all star award the year before.

Tipp received 4 awards, this is some consolation after their bitter defeat but still will not heal the hurt.

John Mullane was also a worthy winner as he single handily kept Waterford afloat and was inspired throughout the campaign.

Now to the footballers

Back to the footballers which will be picked live tonight, no doubt it will take on a similar structure to the hurling with 6 players from Kerry, 4 from Cork, 1 or 2 from Tyrone and one from Dublin for old time sake.

I won 3 and to be honest I have more respect for an O’ Sullivan Cup medal (b competition) than I won with Glenflesk than any of the 3 awards I got.

I got three All Stars - but media have too much say

An all star is a watery prize, it comes from a selection committee and is based on their opinion. This is not won, it is awarded.

A medal is won and no one can take it away from you. There is no politics with winning or losing – it is straight down the line. With all star awards, the media have too much of a say and this is wrong. Leave the all star be picked by the players.

Players player would be better

To me any award selected by players is far more rewarding, purer, genuine.

Outside of the award, it is a good night out, an opportunity to meet players form both codes and have a few jars into the late night.

Only problem for most players is that club football is in full swing and some may need to hold back form the socialising again tonight so they are right for the weekends match.

For the record this is my all star team,

1. Diarmuid Murphy
2. Anthony Lynch
3. Michael Shields
4. Tom O’ Sullivan
5. Tomas O’ Se
6. Graham Canty
7. John Miskella ( would give this to mike mac of kerry but I know they wont)
8. Dermot Earley
9. Seamus Scanlon
10. Paul Galvin
11. Sean Cavanagh
12. Tadgh Kennelly
13. Stephen O’ Neill
14. Declan O’ Sullivan
15. Michael Murphy (Daniel Goulding should get this award)

That's by my reckoning cut up like this -

Kerry – 7

Cork -4

Tyrone – 2

Kildare – 1

Donegal – 1

Won't be far off I reckon, might throw a tenner on same

While the celebrations have now come to an end in Kerry & Kilkenny, it is now down to brass tax for the players as they now have to throw their shoulder to the wheel to aid the cause of their clubs.

Tralee punished by All Ireland celebrations

Here in Kerry, there is a major backlog in games with the County Championship only at quarter final stage. Kerins O’ Rahilly's club in Tralee received little sympathy from the county board the week after the All Ireland as they were pitted against Laune Rangers the following Sunday.

This was hugely unfair considering Rahillys had 4 players involved in the county panel – the 2 Walsh’s, David Moran & Mike Quirke – 3 of which finished on the foeld for the Kingdom the week before against Cork.

Throw in a few days of celebrations followed with the touring of Sam to schools and towns – well let's say these 4 lads were in no fit state to play the Laune, who at this present time have no player involved on the county team since the departure of MF Russell.

County Board to blame for 'gross' unfairness

The county board should have given all players involved with Kerry a week's grace from games, one more weekend won’t make a huge difference come year end. Why not play a round of the county league which would not have been a life or death scenario?.

Rahillys like Rathmore must be cursing their luck and now find themselves out of the most prestigious competition in Kerry. As stated this is grossly unfair to clubs who gave their players to the county and in return are punished for having such quality players.

Mid Kerry clashes interesting

This weekend there are some very interesting clashes, the plum tie being Mid Kerry vs Feale Rangers.

There is an abundance of inter county players spread amongst both teams with Feale Rangers  really holding the aces – Gally& Tadgh Kennelly will no doubt bring their fantastic form to date into this divisional team and along with Anhony Maher, Kieran Quirke, Maurice Corridan, Eamon Fitz and Noel Kennelly they will be a hard team to stop.

However Mid Kerry are the current champs and won't go down without a fight. They have great pace in their forward division, Darren Sullivan, Sean O’ Sullivan & Donnacha Walsh will pin back the Feale defence while Aidan O’ Shea will no doubt be out to prove himself once again to try and win a Kerry jersey in 2010.

Crokes should have enough in the tank for St. Brendans, Stacks & Laune Rangers, hesitant vote to the Laune, South Kerry will have too much for their departed neighbours St Michaels Foilmore.

County style seeping through to county level

So onto more national news, during the week I was watching the highlights of the Down, Derry, Donegal county final and the Galway County final. It is so interesting to see how the style of play which we have watched all year on the tv from the county scene have been adopted by all clubs on view.

The defence on all teams were not willing to kick the ball, opting to handpass to a team mate who in some cases were in a worse position.

Club teams are trying to replicate county teams but in most cases make a hash of it. I always feel at club level things should be kept simple and defenders especially should keep things very simple.

Getting the ball out the danger zone is key priority but teams seem to take on this slow build up out of defence instead of kicking the ball 30 or 40 yards out away from the danger zone.

Who will emerge from Crosmaglen's shadow this year?

However the standard of football was still quiet good and levels of fitness seemed very high. It was great to see Brendan Devanney and Jimmy McGuinness still strutting their stuff up in Donegal, 2 great lads with Devanney still throwing the ball over the bar for fun. Ulster will be very interesting this year as the Kingpins Crossmaglen are out of the equation so it will be interesting to see who will emerge from their shadow.

Will Kernan realise Galway dreams?

Joe Bergin was the saviour up in the Galway county final for his club with his inspirational long range point to level the match. Joe must be a happy man as Galway have now have got one of the best managers in the country in Joe Kernan to show them the way to the promised land. Joe Kernan is a top class manager who has a great way with players, has been there, seen that, done that.

Kernan no doubt has a lot of work to do with this sleeping giant but I can guarantee you the players will now for once start using the fantastic facilities the Galway County Board have established which up to now have been left idle.

Down in rebel side, life goes on after their disappointing day out in Croker.

Clonakilty

Clonakilty are the new champions after defeating the Barrs by a point. This is a great achievement for this west Cork club as they have no player on the present Cork panel.

Clon’s last win was in 1996 when they defeated a highly fancied UCC team that I was part of and were only supposed to turn up and collect the cup. Football however is not that simple and Clon won by 3 or 4 points and were worthy winners.

Clon will now face the eventual winners in Kerry.

Kerry are different to other counties in the sense the Kerry representatives will come from either the Club or County Championship i.e. we discussed the teams remaining in the Kerry county championship above which consists of club teams (Stacks, Laune Rangers, Crokes and St Michaels Foilmore) and divisional teams ( divisional teams are a combination of two or more clubs like Feale Rangers which consists of Finuge, Listowel, St. Senans, Moyvane and Duagh).

If a club team wins the county championship they will automatically represent Kerry in the Munster campaign.

However if a Divisional team wins the county championship the eventual winners of the club championship (competition for all senior club teams) will represent Kerry in Munster.

Kerins O’ Rahilly’s and Ardfert are the 2 teams in the club final so they will be hoping for a divisional team to win out the County. Sure we do nothing straight forward down this side of the country. Correct me if am wrong but as far as I know Kerry & Cork are the only 2 counties that have divisional teams in their county championship??

So a quick reply to a few blog heads.

Replies to Ireland.com readers - you're right Diarmuid Murphy

Tomdin – Diarmuid Murphy was inspirational this year, looking at my blog I gave the poor man no mention after the final. This year was magic for the big man and he is a automatic all star.

He made some wonderful saves during the year and if he does decide to throw in the towel he will leave a huge vacuum to fill. Murph is a very astute man and will know himself if there is another year in him. It is hard to know how 2010 – 2020 will go for Kerry, all I know is that we will always be in the shake up come August/September.

Footiefan – yes this is an amazing achievement for Kerry, six finals in a row, 8 finals out of the last 10, super consistency. The 2 Ks are very strong in either code but I feel Kerry have more counties to bother them than Kilkenny in the hurling. Tyrone, Cork, Galway, Dublin, Derry, Donegal, Kildare all on their day would feel they have a chance of capturing Sam so Kerry can never leave their guard down.

Suzie – Retirement – possibly quiet a few could go from the Kingdom, re the O’ Se’s, sure Marc is only a Babog, Tomas is playing the best football in his life and Darragh is such a rogue he might have an incorrect certificate and he might only  be 30. Lets hope they all do the right thing for themselves, either way the O’ Se family owe nothing to Kerry but Kerry owe them so much.

Talk next week and blog in to see my All Star team for 2009-10-09
